Lee Kwang-Kyung

Ju Young-A
Abstract
This research aims to develop a group autobiography program and evaluate its effect on improving ego-integrity for elderly. Developed by a structured development procedure model, the group autobiography program consists of a series of recalling and writing sessions, each of which is focused on a component of ego-integrity at a time. 9 subjects participated in a preliminary research at a senior academy in Seoul, and based on its result, the program was modified and improved to its final form. The final program was tested on 19 subjects ranging in age between 65 and 90. The subjects participated in the group autobiography program two hours a week for 12 weeks and took ego-integrity tests before and after the program. The program was analyzed based on the quantitative results on ego-integrity scale tests as well as the qualitative results from interviews and writings. The results are summarized as the following: First, the ego-integrity scale test results showed satisfactorily meaningful difference between pre- and post-program. Especially, the subjects showed significant change in the embracement of the past and the present, although there was little change in the attitude in life. Second, the analysis on the interviews and writings further supports that the program helped the subjects develop ego-integrity. Throughout the program, the subjects recollected and reassessed their positive and negative past experiences. Revisiting unresolved issues in their lives, the subjects better embraced their past and present as a whole. In the interviews post-program, the subjects showed more appreciation and satisfaction towards their lives, and they expressed more hope and plans for the future. The significance, limitations, and suggestions for further studies are stated in the discussion section.
